Gage: My 7 Year Old Hero

little boy with type 1 and epilepsy

Gage was born July 2008 with a heart condition, coarctation of aorta, (narrowing of aorta) causing a murmur and a hole in his heart. At 6 months old, his heart looked good. The hole closed and aorta had opened. Life was great until June 6, 2012 when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just a month before his 4th birthday! As if life couldn't possibly get worse, at his 4 year checkup the doctor noticed his heart murmur was really strong. After following up with heart doctors and doing MRI ultrasounds they wanted to just keep following up every 6 months. After accepting what we were dealing with, October came around and we woke up to Gage having a seizure. He was diagnosed with epilepsy about a month later, after he had a second seizure. In November, 2014 it was time to treat Gages heart. They ballooned his aorta to open it up. If all stays well, when he is 12 they will put a stent in. Gage is now 7 and is absolutely amazing. He has been seizure free for a year and his heart looks good. Even diabetes is well under control!!! He is my 7 year old hero!!!
