Melissa: My Dream was to become a Mom, a Teacher, and a Singer

mom with diabetes

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 25 years ago at the age of ten. My dream from a very young age was to become a mom, a teacher, and a singer. I've accomplished all of those things! I was a private voice lessons teacher for 12 years and then went on to have two beautiful little munchkins who are now 3 and 5 years old. My pregnancy with type 1 diabetes was made possible by the support and friendship I found in the diabetes online community. Now I work in that community as a patient advocate, diabetes parody performer, diabetes blogger, and nonprofit leader, writing about diabetes technology, and speaking out for patient interests with every stakeholder from policymaker and regulatory to industry and health care provider. My new dream? To live a long and healthy life with my family thanks to the tremendous strides we've made in diabetes care and treatment.
